Mexico City:

The ancient capital of the Mexican Empire and the current capital of the country, Mexico City is a vibrant settlement soaked in centuries of history, adorned with cultural gems and brought to life by the varied traditional celebrations of its multi-ethnic population. True to its title as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city offers a vast canvas that chronicles the evolution of the Mexican way of life – from Pre-Hispanic heritage sites to the colonial era architecture, all overlooking a 21st century metropolis that is effortlessly merging its traditions with the modern. The city offers intriguing museums to a thriving nightlife, Mexican wrestling matches and live mariachi band performances at the Plaza Garibaldi, Heritage walks and the Art circuit, the experimental gastronomic adventure and an overall enthusiastic air about the city, gives you more than what you signed up for! And if you thought the crowds and the culture is all that there is, Mexico City is set to surprise you once again! Set at an altitude of over 6000 ft above sea level, in a basin surrounded by volcanic mountains, Mexico offers some picturesque hiking trails. Some of the must experience while in Mexico City is the gondola rides in the canal town of XOCHIMILICO, on the outskirts of the city. Another must visit is the Teotihuacan Pyramids – a UNESCO World Heritage Site located at an hour’s drive from the city and houses the Aztech site of the San Juan Teotihuacán.

 

Merida:

Known as the cultural capital of the Yacatan peninsula, Merida is the capital of the modern state of Yacatan and offers the perfect beach holiday destination, with a lot of culture, heritage and classic food. With narrow alleys and broad central town squares, Merida is a classic reminder of Mexico’s colonial past, while also housing the ancient ruins of the Pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. One can enjoy an open air concert at the historical Parac Santa Lucia, marvel at the traditional hand embroidery while you also check out a modern art gallery in the Museo de Arte Popular de Yucatán. A unique architectural highlight is the cathedrals of Merida and the Iglesia de la Tercera Orden, that line the Plaza de la Independencia, for the use of ancient Maya temple relics in the colonial architecture.  On a day trip, you can head to Celestun for viewing the Flamingoes on a boat ride or head to archeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah to unravel the mysteries of the ancient Yacatan culture.

 

Chichén Itzá

Almost a symbolic representation of the Yacatan Peninsula, the archiological sites of the Chichen Itza was the last of the 7 ‘seven wonders of the world’, to be listed in 2007. The grand and majestic step pyramids bare ancient secrets of civilizations that habituated the Americas as early as 10,000 AD. Telling the tale of two cities, one built on the ruins of another, the Chichen Itza is the most well-maintained and impressive site of archeological significance, relevant tot eh Mayan and the Totlec rulers of Mexico. Apart from the pyramids, the ruins also house the classic temple of Kukulkán which are spectacular during the light and sound shows held during the Equinox.

 

Cancun

The beach paradise and the nightlife capital of the Yatacan Pennisula, Cancun is the perfect last stop for an overwhelming discovery trip of a country like Mexico. Lined by luxury beach resorts and several pubs and bars, Cancun offers the best classic holiday reciepies – sun, sand, party and shopping. Situated close to the Caribbean, Cancun offers two versions – a hip, uptown tourist zone and a rustic but equally enthralling zone of the actual city. Also close by is the Isla Contoy National Park for those who love to explore the natural biodiversity. You can also take a chance at swimming with the mighty whale shark at the Isla Holbox, for some more thrills.  The best ways to experience this paradise is by hopping onto a bus to explore the natural beaches or a night of Salsa and tacos at a local bar or indulging in a luxury beach resort with an upscale party, loading up the high spirits, before you haed back home or to your next destination.
